THING #19 Discovering Web 2.0 Tools

I think I'm starting to figure out how Web 2.0 allows us all to share messages across the web. Web tools are the sites where the sharing takes place. I checked out several of the Web 2.0 Awards Nominees and saw several sites that we have learned about in the previous 18 THINGS such as, pbwiki, technorati, zoho, flickr and rollyo.

Signed up for a free account with Zoho.com and learned about the many on-line web applications they have to offer. Several were similar to smart zone communications through Comcast, my source of e-mail communication. I enjoyed opening up the Zoho Writer document and adding it to my blog. Wow, the power of the on-line web is amazing!

THING #17 PBWiki

Listened to the podcast by Helen Blowers and learned all about the "sandbox". Was looking forward to playing but can not figure out how to access the Rocky Mountain 23 Things wiki. Any help would be much appreciated!

THING #16 Wiki's

What a great on-line tool, a collaborative place to share information with other people. Checked out wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki. It's one huge, free on-line encyclopedia.

THING #15 Web 2.0

What is Web 2.0? It's communicating, information sharing and collaborating on the world wide web. How? Through social network sites, video shares, wikis and blogs. Wow! All the wonderful things we're learning about... as Darwin claims, "we should survive" right?

THING #14 Technorati

Technorati is an Internet search engine for searching blogs. It's main competitors are Google and Yahoo. Enjoyed looking at Technorati and did a keyword search for "Learning 2.0". Checked out the blog posts, tags and blog directories. It seems a little scary to be able to have our blogs listed on a search engine. Guess I need to step out and join the party!

THING #13 Social Bookmarking

Learned all about social bookmarking... chose not to create my own account but checked out Del.icio.us. Amazing and potentially so helpful, a way to save all of your bookmarks (web sites), share them with others and also check out other peoples bookmarks. Enjoyed checking out the most popular bookmarks on Del.icio.us. Not too surprised... there were a lot of twitter bookmarks. Learned you can tag not only pictures but bookmarks. Now, I just need to find the time to get started!

THING #12 Search Engines

What a great on line tool for grouping our websites! I created my own search engine using Rollyo. I've been researching Hawaii travel and wish I had discovered Rollyo earlier. It saves so.... much time going through a search engine.

I really don't want to create another account at this time, but I did check out Library Thing, a wonderful on-line service to catalog our books. It's like joining the world's largest book club. How amazing! Check it out... http://www.librarything.com/

THING #10 It's Play Time!

I went to The Generator Blog and designed a custom eye chart, check it out at http://www.eyechartmaker.com/index.php. How fun!! Also, enjoyed the Williams Words generator. It was fun having a silly poem created with the word I provided. Check out http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/ and create your own custom motivational poster.

THING #9 Finding Feeds

There are endless search tools out there to help locate recent newsfeed items of your choice. I thought Topix.net was way cool as you could type in Fort Collins and get all the local news (beats The Coloradoan)!

THING #8 RSS & Newsreaders

THING #8 RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. I set up my newsreader account through Google Reader subscribing to my chosen newsfeeds. This should allow me to stay informed with news from the sites that I'm interested in. Will see??

Blogging

Blogging seems to be a wonderful tool for communicating with people all over the world. It's a bit overwhelming for a novice like myself.
